CONCEPT

We intend to pioneer a new form of theatre. We believe that the same story can be told in many different ways. The Discordia Project is an improvisational theatre company which is committed to infusing each performance of the same story with its own unique meaning/message.

We achieve our goals through a distinct improvisational process. Improvisation begins with the structure of a story, and explores the action beyond the story. Actors become the characters. Situations and circumstances allow characters to interact in new situations or make decisions under different circumstances. In order to enhance the emotive content of these situations, action is set to music. The Discordia Project is improvisational music and theatre fusion.
We call this process Jam-Prov Theatre.

We believe that inherent to both theatrical and musical improvisation, there is an understanding of the living moment, and a commitment to expressing it. But musical improv and improvisational theatre have different means of expressing the moment. We believe that by creating a synthesis between these two art forms, we create a new understanding of the living moment. To date, we have found no examples even remotely connecting improvisational music and improvisational theatre.

The goal of The Discordia Project is not to merely combine these two art forms, but to combine for the purpose of story telling. Within our research we have found very little development in terms of trying to tell a story through improvisational theatre. We believe that by using a script as a foundation to performance, we can effectively communicate a story. We believe that by departing from the script, we can develop a richer more interesting story.

We hope to empower improv in a way that is conventionally unheard of. We believe that if the performers can understand general audience response, through the freedom of improvisation they can tailor the story to the audience's desires. A script is developed and serves as a road map for the performers; however, the audience is the navigator.

Most theater attempts to make all their performances the same. We embrace the chaos of performance and strive to make every show unique. Using the same story for every show, we can tell the story from different people's perspectives, from different points in time, and with different focuses. Every performance is a complete recomposition. But, it's always the same story...
